Te tibuta

human history

Te tibuta. Kiribati national top. This is a garment worn by women. Te tibuta has been made from a pink cotton lawn fabric. A smocking technique has been used to gather the shoulders and chest area. Tucks have been used throughout the smocking to create intricate folds of fabric. Three crocheted rosettes have been embroidered across the chest area upon the smocked fabric. They feature a blue centre, a yellow border and two green petals on either side. A serrated orange ribbon has been zig-zag stitched to border the arm holes and neck of tibuta. A different tone of pink coloured embroidery thread has been used to create a blanket stitch and crocheted finish to the seam's edges of the arms and neck. The back of the tibuta features the same smocked gathers, orange serrated ribbon and blanket stitched, crochet finish. The bottom edge has been left unseamed as the cloth has been cut along the fabrics selvedge.
