To'i

human history

To'i. Hafted stone adze. Adzes were invaluable tools for Moana Pacific societies prior to the introduction of European tools and materials. They were made in a variety of sizes and shapes according to their required use. This to'i consists of a to'i ma'a, dark grey in colour and trapezoidal in cross section, lashed with 'afa (coconut sennit) to a long cylindrical wooden haft. The haft has a pronounced, pointed heel. The to'i ma'a is lashed to the haft with the back of the blade facing outwards. The 'afa is lashed all the way down the handle and is light brown in colour. The haft is light brown in colour and has a matte, textured surface treatment.
