i Wau Culacula
i Wau Culacula. Paddle shaped club. The i wau culacula is carved from kau (wood) with a head shaped into a flat paddle shape, diamond in section, that widens and curves gently towards the base of the head, incorporating an area of elaborate and decorative carving with serrated edges and a raised central ridge before tapering into a long cylindrical shaft. The i wau culacula is dark brown in colour with a very glossy patina. Illustrated in 'Polynesian Artifacts' pl 57.
