Matau. One piece pearl shell fish hook. No line attached. Carved from parau (pearl shell) with a knob at the top of the shank, a barb and a sharpened point. The surface of the matau is polished, with one side dark in colour and the other showing iridescent sheen. NOT illustrated in 'Polynesian Artifacts'
