Tootoo

human history

Tootoo. Staff or Sacred Stave. This ceremonial object is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a long cylindrical shaft, round in section, topped with a stylised ti'i 'Janus figure' (so-called as it depicts two connected figures placed back to back facing outwards) in a crouching position and decorated lightly with serrated edges. The base end of the stave is carved to a point, preceded by a carved flange. The shaft is slightly bent. The sacred stave is a deep red-brown colour with a glossy patina.
