Iliili. Fan. This is a handwoven fan made by Hana Tauekipaoa (b. 1937). A handle of wood has been hafted into a length that is circular in cross-section, smooth-surfaced, and brown in colour. The end of the handle has been carved down flat, creating a smooth finish. The blade has been constructed from a framework of lau niu (coconut midribs) and woven over with kāniu (the young white leaf of the coconut frond). The woven blade is triangular in shape and flat in form. The sides, which are decorated with two openly woven borders, curve in to form a serrated top corner. The spine of the blade protrudes strongly on one side. At the junction of the handle and the blade, a width of pale yellow lau fā (pandanus leaf) has been wrapped around the handle. This width of lau fā has been simultaneously bound and interwoven with a length of 3 ply braided pulu (coconut fibre sennit), creating an intricate geometric mata pēle (pattern), used to further adorn the iliili. The artist describes this fan as an iliili Niue tuai and states that it is given as a special gift to dignitaries.
