A new style dress completely embroidered in a variety of colours on a white background. It includes a variety of patterns from red triangles, a series of blue spades symbols to green ferns and pink and orange flower motifs. Gatu kolose like this one are made to be worn for special occasions and celebrations and can be worn on its own or underneath clothing. They are often made and gifted by grandmothers or by great aunts to a granddaughter or special niece. Melina Nuese makes and gifts her works to her great nieces. This teenga girl’s dress was specifically for the ‘Kolose: The Art of Tuvalu Crochet 2’ show at the Lake House Arts Centre in Takapuna. It is made in a unique style that differs from other styles that have been made by other artists from the Fafine Niutao i Aotearoa group.
