Samban
Sambal, (Suspension hook). Made and used in the Middle Sepik by the Iatmul people. The Sambal is carved from a heavy wood and has been darkened with a soot based paint. This Sambal depicts a standing female ancestor figure with a bird to either side and down her back. The birds' beaks are attached to either side of her head, their claws attached to her chest and upper back on each side. Her hands rest on her upper thighs. The figure stands upon a carved head which form the hooks. There is low relief carving all over creating patterning, facial features and crocodile scarification marks.
