model, presentation
silver presentation model of Auckland War Memorial Museum, silver maquette of Auckland Museum. This model was commissioned by the citizens of Auckland in appreciation of the services of Sir James Gunson, Mayor of Auckland 1915-1925 on the occasion of his retirement. Gunson chaired the War Memorial Committee that was responsible for the decision to build a war memorial museum. The model is based on the architectural design of Auckland architects Grierson, Aimer & Draffin and was made before the building was completed.
This superb example of presentation silver was described in 1925 as "the largest piece of silverwork done in the Dominion". It was made by Charles D Cowan of the firm A Kohn Ltd., manufacturing jewellers of Auckland.
