i Ula. Throwing club. i Ula are carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. This i Ula consists of a ball-shaped head and long slender handle. The head is uneven with fissures naturally formed in the wood due to the rootstock. The handle is round in section with a drilled hole on the butt end for suspension of the short length of natural-coloured fibre twine. The lower half of the handle is carved in tavatava (zigzag) design.
