Te mwae te nikabono

human history

Te mwae te nikabono. Neck ornament of conus shell. This is a neck ornament made of two material components: te nikabono (conus shell discs) and te kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres). The three-strand plaited neckband of te kora is light brown in colour and features twenty five pendants of te nikabono. Te nikabono are circular in shape and flat in form. The pendants vary in diametre. The largest is positioned upon the centre and the remainder taper off in size towards the ends of the neck band. The top surface of te nikabono appear to have been filed into their form showing the shell’s lines of growth from the spire. The underside is concave with more definition of the spires lines. They are off-white in colour and matte in surface texture. Most of te nikabono feature small circular cavities in the centre. A perforation has been drilled near the edge of each of the discs where an additional cord of te kora has been threaded through and bound to the neck band. The ends of the neckband have been fastened into a knot.
