Te tanai
Te tanai. Hafted adze tool. This is an adze blade. It is a component of a tool used in cutting hard materials. The adze blade has been cut form te aubunga (tridacna gigas; clam shell). It is triangular in shape. It has retained its natural convex form. Of its longitudinal form, the widest edge has been filed to form the blade area for contact. The convex surface features curved linear ridges that define the shells lines of growth and natural exterior. The base side of the tanai is concave, smooth in surface texture with small nicks across along the edges. It is off-white in colour with some varied tones of grey.
