Te Buangui

human history

Te Buangui. Whale's tooth. Te Buangui could be used to make a mwae (Neck ornament) that would adorn the body of a distinguished family member after they had passed away, and would be buried with them. This buangui is fashioned from part of a whale's tooth and is dart-shaped and slightly curved. The base features a shallow, oval-shaped cavity. On either side of this opening two small suspension holes have been drilled with remnants of old fibre or cordage inside. The surface of the buangui is glossy and smooth and off-white in colour with yellow patina. The pointed tip is slightly chipped and there are some small abrasions and dark markings on the body.
