Te uubai
Te uubai. Pumpdrill. This is a tool. It is comprised of four material components: te kanni wood (coconut tree; Cocos nucifera), te noko (coconut sennit cord), kora tabuki (2-ply cord of coconut sennit corde and human hair) and a terebra shell. A cylindrical rod of te nii makes up the spine of te uubai. Two rectangular forms of the same wood in the same size have been lashed to the third section of the cydircal rod with te noko. The terebra shell has been set at the end of the rod and lashed with te noko as well. A cylindrical handle of te nii has been threaded with kora tabuki and attached to the top of the rod. The wood is of a mid brown tone, the noko is of a golden brown colour, the hair is dark brown in colour and the terabra shell is off-white in colour. The wood is granular in texture with some porous areas visible. It is smooth in surface and slightly polished. This type of tool is used to create holes. The length of te noko would be wound around the rod, the rod would be positioned in place by where te kabinea makes contact and then the horizontal handle would be pulled down and up creating a spinning top effect that would begin the drilling process.
