Te karoron
Te karoron. A game set consisting of six balls and eight pins. This is a game set which comprises of fourteen parts: six te booro te ngea (balls made of te ngea; pemphis scidula) and eight pins made from te mao (Beach cabbage; Scaevola fructescens). Each te booro te ngea is spherical in form with some abnormalities. Te booro te ngea have been shaped by the use of rocks. They are smooth in surface texture with some shine as a result of polishing. Te ngea provides each ball with a hard form and a weighted feel that are ideal for the game of te karoron. The wood is of a dark brown tone that is characteristic to te ngea. The pins are short and cylindrical in form. They feature a hollow that shows a hard white, foam-like filling that are characterisic to te mao. The wood of te mao is pale brown in colour and shows a linear surface grain. Two pairs of furrows have been cut out to border both ends of the pins. Te karoron is a game where the pins are set standing upright. Te booro te ngea are thrown towards the set of pins, however the aim is to avoid knocking them over. It should also be noted, that the abnomalities in shape among te booro te ngea can hinder an opponents ability to avoid the pins.
