Te Ririko

human history

Te ririko. Neck ornament of porpoise teeth and beads. This is made of kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage), small red beads and wiin te kua kewe (porpoise teeth). The kora has been used to form the neck band which beads and wiin te kua kewe have been threaded along. The wiin te kua kewe are long in shape. One end is tapers into a short point and the other end either reveals the internal cavity of the tooth or is blunt with a flat circular surface. They are off-white in colour, hard in material with discolouring towards the root ends. Circular perforations have been made through the root ends where kora has been threaded through. A series of small red beads have been threaded between the wiin te kua kewe creating an alternating pattern. A different coloured bead has been used to finish the ends of the Neck ornament: one in yellow and one in black. The kora ends have been fastened together closing off the Neck ornament.
