Te atau

human history

Te atau. Weight used in game of kabane. Te atau acts as a bolus weight used in the game of kabane which is a national sport in Kiribati, whereby a line or string is attached to the weight or a ball and thrown over a feather thrown up in the air. The object is also noted as being used to take or catch frigate birds. This particular atau is made from clam shell and is slightly-egg shaped in form. At the top of the atau, a hole has been drilled through to allow it to be looped onto a thick string of two-ply te kora (sennit fibre cord). The string has been looped through and knotted so that the atau does not move. This thick string is attached to a much thinner but longer length of two-ply te kora string which has been looped to avoid tangling. The atau is white in colour with a very smooth surface that thas only three small superficial holes on its exterior. Its round body tapers to a slight point.
