Te kumete
Te kumete. Wooden receptacle. This is a carved wooden receptacle. It has has been carved from the trunk of itai wood (Calophyllum inophyllum). It is rectangular in form with two carved nodes that protude outwards from the centre of the short sided ends. A large rectangular cavity has been carved from the centre. It is low in height and long in shape. Its base is flat, featuring sides that have been carved outwards. The rim of the kumete is flat and the shape of the nodes have been carved to slope downwards. The surface texture features thin grooved furrows that replicate the grain of the wood, possibly eccentuated from water wear. The centre of the trunk can be seen from the exterior of the short sides indicating the direction of how the kumete was carved from the tree. The large size of these kumete were filled with water and used after meals for hand washing. Their rectanfular shape and narrow sides along with the slopped handles made it convinient for emptying the used contents. This kumete was obtained at Aonimau village from Tebano.
