i Ula Kitu
i Ula. Throwing club. i Ula are carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. This i Ula consists of an uneven ball-shaped head and long slender handle. The head of the i Ula has deep natural fissures in the wood formed from the rootstock and is carved to a slight peak at its top. At the point where the handle meets the underside of the head, a ringed depression is carved around the circumference of the handle. The handle is cylindrical with fine cracks in the wood visible in several areas. The handle flares slightly in width towards the butt. Tavatava (shallow incisions) consisting of a zigzag design is carved in light relief all around the lower half of the handle. The i Ula is reddish brown in colour and has a glossy patina.
