Te katau te nana

human history

Te katau te nana. Waist ornament of coconut shell discs. This is made up of two components; te kora (sennit cord) and te nana (coconut shell discs). It is a double-stranded piece, however the longer strand is detached with traces of other disjoined te kora amended by fastening together. It is measured approximately 700mm at length when bringing the longer strand to a loop. Te kora is constructed using the two-ply technique. These are worked by threading te nouo and te nana, which are perforated at the centre. Te nana are of various shades, of its natural, dark brown colour. They have been drilled or cut from a larger piece. These are thin in depth and small in circumference.
