Te nuota

Te nuota. Belt of human hair. The nuota is a waist ornament used as part of the adornment for Kiribati male dancers' costumes. The nuota is made with long lengths of twisted ira n atu (human hair) and these are all dark and light brown in colour. Some part of round braided hair are secured with light brown benu (coconut husk fibre) and some other braids are secured with dark brown te baanni (coconut leaf). Each braid is approximately 3mm in diameter. The braids are bristly in texture overall as loose ends of invidivual hair strands stray from each braid. This nuota is currently stored as a bundle.
