Te tanai

human history

Te tanai. Hafted adze tool. This is an adze blade. It is a component of a tool used for cutting into hard materials. This has been cut and carved from te aubunga (tridacna gigas; clam shell). It is triangular in shape. It has retained its natural convex form and shell exterior. The exterior shows a series of curved ridges that define the shells lines of growth. Additionally, pores dapple the surface texture. One edge has been smoothed to show the contact area of the blade. The underside of the blade is features a large ridge that runs vertically across its form. The sides of this taper down towards the filed edges. There are more pores present on the underside of the tanai (adze blade). It is off-white in colour with varied tones grey and heavy in weight.
