Te bure ni bai
Te bure ni bai. Pandanus Wrist ornament. Baan ni kaina (pandanus fibre) is wrapped around a length of te aanni (coconut tree leaf) which is sourced from the layer of fibre on the concave side of the main stalk. This piece of aanni has been shaped into a circle to form the foundation of the bure ni bai. It is stiff and flat. The thin strips of baan ni kaina are woven around this base of te aanni. A geometric checkered pattern is formed with natural and dark-dyed strips of baan ni kaina. The dark pigment used to dye strips of pandanus may have derived from the mae tree (breadfruit). The bure ni bai is light in weight. There is a little fraying of fibre in one area.
