Matau

Matau. Fish hook component (shank). Used for night time fishing. Shank carved from a single piece of wood, possibly rakau toa (ironwood). Pointed tip on long end and blunt tip at short end of the shank. Grooves visible at both ends of the shank to provide grip for lashing.
