- Son of Te Huatahi Pirihi Kaihote and Alfred Thomas Carroll.
His father enlisted as 19842 Private Thomas Carroll, 20th Reinforcements. Private Carroll served with the Māori Pioneers on the Western Front 1917 – 1918 being repatriated to New Zealand in 1919 and returning to Wairoa and farming.
After spending some time in England, the 28th Māori Battalion landed in Greece on 27th March 1941 and via Athens was moved to Katerini as the NZ units took up positions along the Aliakmon River.
From the citation posted in 1945, for the citation of the Military Medal and from Major Dyers report in the Battalion’s diary: “On 16 April 1941 Private Carroll was armed with a sub-machine gun and continually went out in search of enemy patrols who were threatening to penetrate around the flanks. Later when this had been effected, he went out under heavy fire and successfully stopped the advancing enemy. He was last seen with his gun hunting the enemy.” The citation was published in the London Gazette on 27th November 1945.
“Then could I tell you of brave men: Harry Taituha, whose section post was rushed, who refused to run and was left for dead; Karetu, who killed at close quarters with his Bren gun; Joe Hiroti and Carroll, the Tommy gunners who went looking for more; Tom Hawea and Murph, the mortar men who refused to be afraid; Fowler, the runner boy who was very frightened and yet account of action.”
It was not until the day he died that the Carroll whanau were aware that he had been awarded the Military Medal.
Private Carroll was posted missing on 18th April 1941, it was not until 21th September 1941 that a report from the Swiss Red Cross, CR1577, that Private Carroll was a POW in Stalag XVIII B , Wolfsburg, Austria. Private Carroll was one of 814 New Zealanders, 320 were Maori, from the Greece and Crete campaigns held in 1941. Stalag XVIII A was liberated by the British 8th Army in May 1945 and remaining POW were liberated and moved to Italy or the UK for repatriation. Private Carroll is reported ‘safe’ in the UK on 24th May 1945.
Private Carroll was finally embarked on 21st August 1945 and disembarked in New Zealand on 30th September 1945. Private Carroll returned to Wairoa before moving to Wellington for work where he met Acacia-Faye '‘Fay” Haromi Robertson (Kai Tahu/ Ngai Tahu) from Little River, Akaroa in the late 1940’s.
