      'In the action at PETRAS PASS, Greece, on 16 April 1941 Private Carroll was armed with a sub-machine gun and continually went out in search of enemy patrols who were threatening to penetrate around the flanks. Later when this had been effected, he went out under heavy fire and successfully stopped the advancing enemy. He was last seen with his gun hunting the enemy.'. (Source: The National Archives.
