Kōrero taurongo
- Charles Frederick Alison was born on 13 December 1888, the son of Duncan Donald Tobias Alison and Emma Alison of 47 King Edward Parade, Devonport, Auckland. Before enlisting he worked as a clerk.
Charles was one of three brothers who served during the World War I, alongside John Alfred Edward Alison (13/2153), also known as Alfred Edward Alison, and Harold Alexander Alison (24862).
He enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 8 February 1916 and was posted to A Company, 13th Reinforcements. He was promoted to corporal before embarking from New Zealand on 27 May 1916. After further training in England, he reverted to the rank of private and joined the 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in France. He was appointed temporary Lance Corporal on 22 February 1917 and confirmed in that rank on 1 May 1917.
On 7 June 1917, during the Battle of Messines, Alison was leading a working party constructing a strongpoint when the position came under enemy shellfire. A shell burst nearby and he was killed in action. His body was not recovered, and he is commemorated on the Messines Ridge (New Zealand) Memorial to the Missing in Belgium.
Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira holds material relating to Charles and the wider Alison family. The Alison Family papers, 1915–1922 (MS-1322) include Charles Frederick Alison’s soldier’s pay book, two incomplete letters, his will and two letters relating to his death. The same collection also includes Harold Alexander Alison’s soldier’s pay book, letters, a postcard, a greeting card and four photographs. Further family correspondence is held in the Papers relating to the Alison and Armitage families, 1845–1986 (MS-1457).
Charles Alison was also included in the 1917 issue of New Zealand at the Front, a magazine written, illustrated and published in France by members of the New Zealand Division, on page 141. AWMM
