Kōrero taurongo
- Son of Wi Kio and Rangiahua Kio, of Te Kuiti, New Zealand.
Private Wi joined the Maori (Pioneer) Battalion on 14 September 1917 at Bournonville.
At the beginning of December 1917 Wi fell ill, suffering from debility. His health did not improve and he was transferred to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst on 11 December. This illness developed into pneumonia, and he died of this disease on 8 February 1918. (Church, p.177)
Next of Kin: Mr Wi Kio, Te Kuiti, Waitomo (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 2))
Father recorded in enlistment papers as Wi Kio was Michael Te Wehiwehi (Wirapakio) Wikio, and mother Sarah Rangiahua Wi (née Hetet, 1873–1962) of Ngāti Maniapoto, Te Kuiti. Eight sons served in the New Zealand Army: five in World War I — Henry Wi Waka (19/474), Thomas (16/486), Henry Teko (19/546), Peter (19/610), Henry Wirepa Kio (19984) — and three in World War II — Sugar (67526), Kharki (813312), Leonard Kio (68442). Their service is commemorated at Te Tokanganui-a-noho Marae, Te Kuiti, and at Auckland War Memorial Museum, including the burial of Henry Wi Waka at Brockenhurst (St Nicholas) Churchyard, Hampshire.
