Kōrero taurongo
- Section of a letter written to Archie's mother 18 August 1918 from France:
"I have two or three daydreams at times, that helps a lot, to keep me cheerful, shall I picture one for you, It is :
[Scene] A troopship is steaming in alongside a wharf, & I see myself on that boat. I am leaning over the side, & I see a great gathering of people, yet amongst that gathering I see only two faces, & those faces are the dearest things on earth to me. I always picture those two faces together, and always they are looking to see that I have done my duty, & am returning to seek my reward. My reward is; well, looking after two people , & who they are you can guess. So now you can see why I am so anxious for you to take things easy...."
Died of wounds (gunshot)
Five brothers served in World War 1, 4 were killed - Arthur (81637), Edward (12/1163), Archibald (48440), William (6/2489) and James (13/2163); only Edward (12/1163) survived.
