Kōrero taurongo
- Henry Trood, a returned soldier of Samoan descent, died at Auckland Hospital on 15 October 1916 following a tram accident on Dominion Road the previous evening. He suffered a fractured skull after being struck by a tram while attempting to board it. Trood had served with the Native Contingent of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and had been discharged on 2 October 1916. His mother lived in Apia, Samoa, and his father, who had died approximately six months earlier, had served as British Agent for Samoa. A coroner's inquiry was opened on 16 October 1916. AUCKLAND, October 10. A young Maori Soldier who was seriously injured by a tram-car late on Saturday night died at the hospital. Spectators of the accident say that he walked right on to the tram-rails and fell under the front of the car. A paper on his clothing bore the name of Henry Trood, but his identity has been established.Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 9 June 2025 - Ashburton Guardian, Volume XXXVII, Issue 3581, 16 October 1916, Page 4
