Kōrero taurongo
- John Morgan (16/24), First Māori Contingent, became the first New Zealand serviceman in the First World War to undergo a double amputation. He lost both legs below the knee during the fighting at Gallipoli on 21 August 1915 and endured five further surgeries after septic poisoning set in, resulting in amputations at the thigh. Morgan was treated at Walton-on-Thames before being transferred to Roehampton, where he learned aspects of artificial limb-making while being fitted with new prosthetic legs. His experience was later recorded as an example of courage and adaptability shown by severely wounded Māori servicemen. (Source: Leanne Croon Hickman, “Making New Men,” NZJPH 9, 2023.) AWMM

- MR JOHN MORGAN Returned soldiers gathered at Bromley cemetery yesterday & scattered Flanders poppies on the grave of Mr John Morgan, a well known member of the Maori community in Canterbury. The Returned Services’ Association was represented by the president, Mr Colin Miln, who spoke in appreciative terms of Mr Morgan’s record as a soldier in the last war, and of his influence among the Maori people. Formerly of Gisborne, Mr Morgan (who was 52 years old) was a member of the Whanau Apanui, a section of the Ngati-Porou of the East Coast of the North Island. He was incapacitated in the last war, & in recent years was a familiar sight in Christchurch in his wheeled chair. Mr Morgan is survived by a widow & several grown-up children. One son is serving overseas with the Royal New Zealand Air Force.) Mr .Morgan was deeply interested in the social welfare of the Maori people, and until his death was secretary to the Christchurch Maori community. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of the Ngati-Otautahi Club (which was represented at the funeral by its chairman, Mr John Stewart). The chairman, Mr Vernon Thomas, represented the Christchurch Maori Association.
Mr Morgan was known as an active propagandist on behalf of the Maori people, and played an influential part among those resident in Christchurch. During the depression period he kept open house at his home in Christchurch and personally assisted many of his race. Until his death, after a long period of suffering, he took the keenest interest in the Maori war effort. One of his last acts was to assist a party of young tribesmen from Ngati-Porou who had come to the South Island under the manpower scheme.Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 16 June 2024 - PRESS, VOLUME LXXIX, ISSUE 23916, 7 APRIL 1943, PAGE 3 - Ingoa maumaharatanga
