Pericles' funeral oration

Translated by Bernard Makoare

MCMXIV - MCMXVIII

The whole earth is the sepulchre of famous men.
Ko te Ao katoa hei torere mo nga totonui, e hinga atu ra

They are commemorated not only by columns and inscriptions in their own country
Ehara o ratou tohu whakamaraharatanga ko nga pou whakairo me nga tuhituhinga korero i roto i o ratou ake whenua noa

But in foreign lands also by memorials graven not on stone
Erangi, kei whenua ke ano hoki nga whakairo whakamaumaharatanga, ehara i nga kohatu anahenahe

but on the hearts of men
Erangi i roto i te ngakau aroha pumau tonu o nga iwi.
