Te reeree

human history

Te reeree. Sword. This is a weapon made from the following materials: wii ni bakoa (sharks teeth), noko (coconut midrib), kanni (coconut palm wood), kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage) and ira (pandanus leaf). A length of kanni has been cut, carved and filed to portray both sword and handle through a cylindrical form. The base shows a circular cross-section and the top shows a tapered point. A ring of ira marks the intersection of the handle and where the barbed sword begins. Four pairs of noko extend from the ira towards the pointed end of the reeree. Each pair shows an inlay of wii ni bakoa. Each wii ni bakoa has a circular perforation drilled through the centre where the kora has been threaded through and lashed down to secure the noko to the reeree. A few wii ni bakoa have either fractured or remain missing. This particular reeree was "given by a man-of-war sailor to Captain LeRoy's eldest daughter in 1873. Before giving it, snapped off the poison point as the slightest scratch would have caused blood poisoning" as stated on the original ethnology record.
