Ta'aiga lau 'ie

human history

Ta'aiga lau 'ie. Roll of pandanus. This is a coiled ta'aiga lau 'ie. Lau 'ie (pandanus) are sala (cut), collected and fa'alā (left in the sun to dry). This drying process could take between two to seven days. During this process the lau 'ie are brought inside at night to prevent them from getting wet. Once the lau 'ie are fully dry they are coiled into a ta'aiga (roll or disk) and held together using strips of dried fau (type of hibiscus). These coils are then kept for use at a later time. To prepare for use the ta'aiga is unrolled and the strips cut and straightened using the back of a knife. These strips will then be used to lalaga (weave) fala (mats) or 'ato (baskets).
