Kete

Kete. Bag. For carrying personal items. Woven from rauara (pandanus leaf) with overlaid dyed-brown/red and dyed-black apuraka (giant swamp taro) akamanea (decoration). Rectangular in shape. The kete has a patara (serrated) decorative edge. Diagonally overlaid apuraka form surface patterns known as katikativai (two rows of vertical lines of check) that touch. Narrow areas of natural coloured rauara on upper and lower parts of kete. Single iri (braid) tatai (handle) interwoven with dyed-brown/red apuraka strips. Originally gifted in 1932.
