Tabua. A large size ceremonial whale's tooth with magimagi (coconut sennit) suspension cord attached. An iyau (treasure) of high cultural value to Fijians. Sourced from a tovuto (sperm whale), the tabua is curved and rounded towards its tip, and ovoid in cross section. A hole is drilled at the base at tip of the tabua for suspension of the magimagi cord. The outer surface of the tabua is highly polished and a yellow-brown colour. Several grooves in the tabua's surface. The rim around the base of the tabua is jagged and thin. The hollow inner cavity of the tabua is conical in shape and dark brown in colour. The cord of magimagi is medium brown in colour.
