Te kakoko
Te kakoko. Woven glass holders made from the young central part of the coconut leaf. These are a pair of woven glass holders that are part of a set of four. They are cylindrical in form with a circular rim and concave base. Both are finely woven from kakoko. The weave structure begins from the centre of the base through a plain-weave style in the form of a square and then changes to a twill weave pattern forming the sides of the glass holders. Three kakoko pinnules have been synthetically dyed; two in green and one in orange. These pinnules have been stitched horizontally across the sides of the holder to create a decorative pattern. The colours alternate in different levels for both glass holders. Te kakoko is considered a significant material for its careful cultivation and flexible properties when used in weaving. The non-dyed kakoko remains in its natural off-white colour.
