Te kai ni kibekibe
Te kai ni kibekibe. This is a large horse mussel shell that was intended for gardening. As a whole, it is shaped like a tear-drop in the form of a concavity. The surface of the concavity is smooth and shiny. There are two pairs of drilled perforations that run adjacent to the umbo. Two strands of corroded wire have been threaded through the pair of perforations closest to the umbo. There is a blister fracture near the mussel scar. The hinge area appears to be filed down where the original umbo point existed. The thin edges have been filed smooth however the centre is thick in depth. The interior is dark brown with a small area of transparency near the edge. The fine ridges that make up the lines of growth are mostly covered with white erosion. There is a small triangular chip on the edge.
