Te kaneati
Te kaneati. Bonito lure. This is made up of four components: cassis shell, bone, te ira n atu (human hair) and te benu (coconut sennit fibre). The shank is of an ivory colour and is shaped and smoothed from a cassis shell into a tubular-like form, probably using an atitai (hard coral stone). At one end, a perforation is bored through the body of the shank. A thin two-ply te kora, made of black ira n atu and natural brown benu, is looped through this hole and joined by loosely tying it together. The opposite end has furrows in the shank to assist in the lashing of the point and hackle of ira n atu. This is done by wrapping a two-ply te kora, of ira n atu and benu, securely around the collective objects. The point is made of a bone, that is brown in colour, and appears to have elements of deterioration.
