Te kaimareirei

human history

Te kaimareirei. Gardening sieve. This is a gardening sieve used for sifting soil. It is comprised of two material components: a wooden circular frame made from ngea (pemphis acidula) and te kora (woven coconut sennit cordage). The ngea wood has been bent into a circular frame. Attached to this is an intricately knotted net of te kora. The net structure is larger in the mid-section as its mass protrudes outwards showing that it is not taut. The wooden frame is polished and mid brown in colour. The kora is of a golden brown colour. A separate 2-ply looped handle of te kora has also been attached to the wooden frame. This is where a persons hand would be inserted and assist with handling te kaimareirei. This te kaimareirei was used for sifting soil for babai (Tuber; Cyrtosperma chamissonis; giant swamp taro).
