AUCKLAND MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS IN 2022/2023 BRING THE WORLD TO TĀMAKI MAKAURAU
Over the course of 2022 and 2023 Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum will bring Auckland an exciting programme of international touring exhibitions.
“It is a privilege to provide Tāmaki Makaurau with a compelling and varied series of international exhibitions,” says Chief Executive, Dr David Gaimster. “They bring the world to Auckland and showcase a breadth of human and natural heritage. These new touring partnerships cement Auckland Museum’s place on the global map for hosting special exhibitions,” continues Dr Gaimster.
The global pandemic has disrupted shipping both nationally and internationally and, as a result, the openings of the exhibitions Ancient Greeks: Warriors, Athletes and Heroes and Secrets of Stonehenge were delayed. Regrettably these postponements were outside of the Museums’ control. However, new dates are now confirmed for these two highly anticipated internationally acclaimed exhibitions, both opening in 2022.
New to the Museum’s international touring exhibition schedule is Egypt: In the Time of Pharaohs, the largest collection of Ancient Egyptian artefacts that has ever travelled to Aotearoa New Zealand. The exhibition will shed new light on life and belief along the fertile Nile Valley under the Pharaohs.
Ancient Greeks: Warriors, Athletes and Heroes
10 June – 16 October 2022
Much awaited, this exhibition stars the largest collection of Ancient World treasures ever loaned by the British Museum to Aotearoa New Zealand. Featuring over 170 objects, key exhibits in the show include iconic black and red-painted vases featuring athletes, gods, and and warriors; stunning marble and terracotta, statues and reliefs; bronze figurines; arms and armour; toys and games; fine gold jewellery; and coins.
Secrets of Stonehenge
16 December 2022 – 25 April 2023
Shrouded in mystery, Stonehenge is one of the most awe-inspiring ancient sites in the world. Featuring more than 300 ancient artefacts from more than 4,000 years ago, together with the latest archaeological and scientific evidence, this exhibition will reveal the secrets of Stonehenge, shedding light on its purpose, its cultural power and the people who built it.
Egypt: In the Time of the Pharaohs
9 June – 5 November 2023
More than 5000 years ago, a rich and powerful civilisation developed alongside the River Nile. Egypt, the land of Pharaohs and its extraordinary art and cultural splendour, has long captivated the imagination of people all over the world. Featuring more than 350 original artefacts – some of them more than 4500 years old – this exhibition delves into the distant past and explores the stories and realities of life and culture in the time of the Pharaohs.
<p>On now, from Auckland Museum’s rich Documentary Heritage collection, is the exhibition <a href="/visit/exhibitions/nature-boy"><strong><em>Nature Boy: The Photography of Olaf Petersen</em></strong></a>. This is the first-ever retrospective exhibition dedicated to the work of Olaf Petersen (1915–1994), Aotearoa New Zealand’s pre-eminent nature photographer of the 20th century. Petersen’s work has recently been inscribed onto the UNESCO Memory of the World Aotearoa NZ National Register in recognition of its global significance for documentary heritage.</p> <p>Visitors can also take the opportunity to see <a href="/visit/exhibitions/trex-peter"><strong><em>Peter the T. rex</em></strong></a> making its first public debut in April. Eleven metres long, three metres high and displayed in its hunting position, this is one of a small number of almost complete fossil <em>Tyrannosaurus rex</em> skeletons in the world and the first real <em>T. rex</em> fossil ever to be exhibited in Aotearoa New Zealand. </p> <p><strong>“There has never been a better time to plan a visit to Auckland Museum,”</strong> says Dr Gaimster.</p>
