Biographical information
- Evelyn Gertrude Brooke trained at Wellington Hospital and served with the New Zealand Army Nursing Service during World War I. In August 1914 she was appointed Second-in-Charge of the group of nurses sent with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Advance Party to German Samoa. She travelled aboard Moeraki with Fanny Wilson and Louise Brandon and worked at the hospital in Apia.
After returning from Samoa, Brooke continued nursing overseas. She served aboard the hospital ship Maheno, including during the Gallipoli campaign, and later worked in Egypt, England and France. She was appointed Matron and served with New Zealand military hospitals, including No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital at Brockenhurst. Her wartime service extended for more than five years.
Brooke was awarded the Royal Red Cross, First Class, and later received a Bar to the Royal Red Cross for her nursing service in France and Flanders. Her records note that she was the only New Zealand Army Nursing Service member of the first New Zealand Expeditionary Force to receive the Bar to the Royal Red Cross.
After the war Brooke returned to New Zealand. In 1925 she married William John Brown of Nelson, a returned serviceman, and was subsequently known as Evelyn Gertrude Brown.
She later became Matron of Rannerdale Home at Papanui, Christchurch, which cared for ex-service patients. She worked at Rannerdale for a number of years before retiring to private nursing and later returning to Wellington.
Evelyn Gertrude Brown died in Wellington on 11 February 1962. AWMM
