Biographical information
- Arthur Percy Sing was one of four brothers who served during World War I, alongside Herbert Stanley Sing (12/1097), Albert Victor Sing (13/3077) and Robert Francis Sing (12/1096). Their father, William Ping Sing, was born in China, and their mother, Francis Margaret Smith, was a New Zealander of Irish descent.
Arthur was a prominent rugby and Rugby League player. During his military service he played for the New Zealand Army rugby team and was a member of the side that won the King’s Cup tournament in Britain in 1919. He later toured South Africa with the Army team and, after returning to New Zealand, represented Auckland and the North Island.
Sing subsequently switched to Rugby League and was selected for the New Zealand team that toured Britain in 1926–27. The tour was marked by a serious dispute between players and management, and Sing was one of six players subsequently disqualified for life by the New Zealand Rugby League. In 1927 he was also warned off Carlaw Park.
Sing died in Auckland in 1936. Contemporary reports noted that he had been in poor health for several months as a result of war injuries. AWMM
