    • Subject Notes
Born in Auckland in 1915 of a Swedish mother and a Danish father Olaf Petersen (pronounced oo-la) lived in Swanson all his life. The inspiration to become a photographer came from his mother who had a Kodak Ensign postcard camera and did all her own processing. Still in his teens he made contact with the famous Auckland photographer Henry Winkelman who had retired to the area of Swanson. This prompted Petersen to buy a similar camera to his mother's, which was soon succeeded by a quarter plate reflex, and by 1936 he purchased his first of many Rollies but he eventually acquired a Hasselblad.
One of Petersen's first professional assignments was the visit of the Queen to Henderson in 1953
He died on 12 September 1994 aged 79 years
