Subject Notes

There were many bookplate societies emerging in Japan in the first part of the 20th century, as Japanese woodblock artists were experimenting with the concept of the bookplate. Their use of a wide-ranging palette, and polychromatic technique, is what distinguishes Japanese bookplates from the European equivalent.

In 1933, Shoji Kozuka founded Nippon Zoshohyo Kyokai (the Japan Bookplate Society). These limited edition year books were produced by Nippon Zoshohyo Kyokai in the 1930s. They are extremely rare as many copies were lost in the bombing of Japan during the Second World War.
