    Provenance: The manuscript was presented to the Museum Library by S. Percy Smith in 1922. It had been given to Smith by Churchill in 1902. An inscription on the inside front cover reads: "S. Percy Smith / ma le alofa tele o / Willm Churchill / 1902."

    William Churchill (1859-1920) arrived in Sāmoa in 1896 to take up the diplomatic posting of US Consul. He was recalled back to the United States in October of the following year. Churchill had a keen academic interest in philology, the study of language in oral and written historical sources.
