Letter from 'Lessel' Greig to his mother Mrs. Ruby Wotton, 19 August 1945

documentary heritage

Writing freely for the first time since his internment, Greig writes in rejoice of the end of the War. He mentions the six Americans who landed by parachute on 16 August 1945 who assisted in the taking over of the camp from the Japanese authorities. Of arrangements made via two way radio for their removal - and the possibility of having to go to England to be 'demobilised' - a possibility which would afford them the chance of stating their cases in person to the colonial service authority. Greig writes of Bill Hammond and 'Jabby' Julian two fellow New Zealanders and recent arrivals from Japan who reinforced 'the firm of Griffin, Horner, and Greig' on April 29. Finally, he writes in relief at the increased food rations and of his excitement to be returning to a normal diet.
