Archaeologist

Professor Simon Holdaway is a New Zealand trained archaeologist, graduating from Otago University. For his PhD dissertation he investigated stone tool technology associated with the transition from Neanderthal to modern humans in France.

Simon’s research looks at the relationship of people to environmental change. He has worked extensively in Australia – in Tasmania, the outback of western New South Wales and more recently at Weipa in northern Queensland.

Simon is also involved in research in the Fayum in Egypt and holds a Marsden Grant looking at the period 8-10,000 years ago which was a time of great environmental change and relationship to the beginning of agriculture in Egypt.
