    • Lieutenant Robert Ogilvie Buchanan was born on 9 September 1894, at Maheno, North Otago to Janet and Duncan Buchanan.

      He attended Tapanui Primary and District High Schools, completing his education at Otago Boys High School in Dunedin. His studies at Otago University were interrupted by the call for volunteers for service in the 2nd Otago Regiment. He sailed with them for the Middle East in 1916 .

      That year he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on probation while in G Company of the 16th Reinforcements (Otago Daily Times, 17 August, 1916) and later that year as 2nd Lieutenant in J Company was posted to the Infantry Section of the 21st Reinforcements (ODT, 12 September, 1916). While in the trenches at the Western Front he was wounded (not severely). (ODT, 17 June, 1918). Shortly before he was wounded he served with a Light Trench Mortar Battery of the Otago Regiment. (ODT, 7 September, 1918)

      After his return to New Zealand, he completed a M.A degree with Honours, at the University of Otago, specialising in Economics. He then taught Geography at Mount Albert Grammar? School, Auckland where he also coached rugby In 1925 he enrolled at the London School of Economics, gaining a B.Sc degree (1st class honours). He taught at both the London School of Economics and University of London, where he held the position of Professor, Chair of Geography at the LSE from 1949 to 1961.
