Son of Hoani and Peeke Mete Kingi, of Putiki, Whangarei AWMM
    • Aug 1915 - CORPL. METE KINGI KILLED. A private wire has been received from the Hon James Allen (Minister for Defence) by Mr Hoani Mete Kingi, of Putiki, that one of his sons, Corporal Teira H. Mete Kingi, has been killed in action on that great night attack on the 8th inst. Corporal Mete Kingi, who was 26 yeans of age, was employed on a farm up the Wanganui river when he joined the First Maori Contingent, together with his two younger brothers, Q.M.S. Paki Mete Kingi and Private Henry Mete Kingi. These boys were amongst the first to answer the Call when war broke out, and they immediately joined the First Maori Contingent. They came from a great fighting stock and of a well-known family among the natives throughout the Dominion. They were grandsons of that well-known fighting cheif Mete Kingi Paetahi, who was the leader of the native "friendlies" who fought for the British against the Hauhaus at the Moutoa Island battle on the Whanganui River, and the Moutoa Monument now stands in the Moutoa Gardens in memory of that great combat, and many other engagements on the West Coast in the sixties. The young Corporal was a member of the Wanganui Irish Rifles, and took a very keen interest in volunteering. Mr. Mete Kingi also received a wire of condolence from the Governor on behalf of the King and Queen.
